Indiana Department of Insurance Warns Insurance Agents About Potential Scam
Indiana Department of Insurance is warning Indiana licensed agents to be aware of a potential scam targeting them.
The Department has received reports from other states that individuals have been calling their licensed insurance agencies and representing themselves as employees of the respective department of insurance. For example, Nevada reports “These individuals have requested payment for a penalty fee. The same individuals also requested that the insurance agencies provide credit card and social security information over the phone to make the penalty payment and to avoid cancellation of their license”.
The states have warned all agents that “these individuals are not employees of the department of insurance and are attempting to scam insurance agencies for financial gain”.
If Indiana licensed agents receive similar calls requesting a penalty fee, credit card and social security information, they are advised not to provide the caller with any personal information. The Department will always provide written confirmation regarding any payment request. It is not the policy, practice, or procedure for the Indiana Department of Insurance to request credit card or social security information over the telephone with regards to a payment.
Indiana agents should contact their local law enforcement agency as well as the Indiana Department of Insurance at (317)-234-6068.
